Statement on Tripura Police Slapping UAPA on IAMC for Speaking up Against Anti Muslim Violence
The Indian American Muslim Council (IAMC) has been booked by the Indian Police under draconian provisions of anti-terror law UAPA for urging the US President Joe Biden and Secretary Antony Blinken to condemn the Hindu extremist violence against Muslims in the state of Tripura.
Along with IAMC, more than 68 Twitter handles mostly belonging to the members of Muslim community have been booked under the draconian law with the sole intention of muzzling the voices that criticised the BJP led Tripura government’s response and complicity in the anti-Muslim violence.
IAMC strongly condems these tactics and calls on Tripura Police to immediately withdraw these false charges against everyone and instead redirect these resources on investigating Hindu extremists who were involved in the targeted attacks against the members of Muslim community.
IAMC also reiterates its earlier calls and urges US President Joe Biden and Secretary Antony Blinken to immediately condemn the violence in Tripura and convey to the Indian Government unequivocally that the US will not tolerate such violence against Muslims.
