USCIRF expresses grave concern over Love Jihad law, mosque demolitions, hate speech against minorities in Uttar Pradesh

Right from the time that the Bharatiya Janata Party came to power in Uttar Pradesh, the state has become another laboratory for Hindutva politics in India. Several discriminatory laws were passed and violence was unleashed upon the minorities. Now with the UP assembly polls approaching, new cases of lynching, mosque demolitions and communal violence is being witnessed across the state…. The Briefing, titled “State Repression on Civil Liberties in Uttar Pradesh,” was attended by policy staff of Members of US Congress and officials from the US Department of State, among others…. “It often results in violence and [abets] efforts to prohibit interfaith marriages using the false narrative of false conversions,” Niala Mohammad, Senior Policy Analyst, USCIRF, said at a Congressional Briefing at Washington, D.C., this week…. That is why, Niala added, USCIRF had recommended that the US Department of State designate India as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC), for “engaging in and tolerating systemic, ongoing and egregious violation of religious freedom,” and “impose targeted sanctions on individuals and entities responsible for severe violations of religious freedom by freezing those individuals’ or entities’ assets and/or barring their entry into the United States.”
Man beaten by police in public in Salem dies, family demands action

A 47-year-old farmer, A. Murugesan, of Edayappatti, died on Wednesday, after being indiscriminately beaten with a lathi by a policeman in public, at the Pappinaickenpatti check-post under the Yethapur police station limits in Salem district on Tuesday evening…. A video clip of the brutal attack, widely shared on mobile messaging platforms and social media on Wednesday, showed the police beating the farmer, though his friends pleaded with them to let him go. The policeman stopped the lathi blows only after Murugesan fell unconscious. The video was shot by a villager accompanying Murugesan and it also showed Murugesan pleading with the policeman who continued to attack him with a lathi. Three policemen on duty were mere spectators when the incident took place….
Three Lynched In Tripura On Suspicion Of Cattle Theft: Police

Three men were allegedly lynched to death in the Khowai district of Tripura on suspicion of cattle theft in the early hours of Sunday, police said. Those killed were identified as Jayed Hossain (30), Billal Miah (28) and Saiful Islam (18), all residents of Sonamura subdivision in the Sepahijala district. Villagers of Namanjoypara spotted a mini-truck heading towards Agartala, carrying five cattle, around 4.30 am, Superintendent of Police Kiran Kumar said. They chased it and managed to stop the vehicle near North Maharanipur village, he said. The villagers started thrashing the three people on the mini-truck with “lethal weapons”, and lynched two of them, while the other managed to flee, he said. The mob got hold of the other person at Mungiakami, a tribal hamlet near North Maharanipur, and he was lynched there, the officer added….
