Hindu wedding at Kerala mosque showcases harmony

A mosque in Kerala hosted a Hindu wedding on its premises on Sunday. The wedding, conducted by the Cheruvally Muslim Jamaat Mosque near Alappuzha, was solemnised according to Hindu rituals in front of a lighted traditional lamp. Guests from both communities participated.

Anju and Sarath exchanged garlands and performed rituals in the presence of a priest on the mosque premises that had been decked up. Sadya, a vegetarian feast, was prepared, too. Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan took to Facebook to congratulate the couple and said the state had always upheld and showcased religious harmony. The wedding was held at a time when a concerted attempt was being made to divide people in the name of religion, Vijayan said, referring to the new citizenship regime.

Since Anju belongs to a poor family, her mother had sought help from the mosque committee to conduct the wedding. The committee gifted 10 sovereigns of gold and Rs 2 lakh to the bride. Food for around 1,000 people had been arranged, Nujumudeen Alummoottil, the secretary of the Cheruvally Jamaat committee, said.
