Hindu extremists demand survey of historic Jama Masjid in Delhi

A leader of the extremist group Hindu Sena, Vishnu Gupta, wrote to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) demanding a survey of the historic Jama Masjid in Delhi. Gupta alleged that Mughal emperor Aurangzeb demolished temples in order to build the mosque and that the remains of these temples, including idols, were used in the mosque’s construction. The Jama Masjid, one of Delhi’s iconic landmarks, is currently managed by the ASI.

Demands for surveys of mosques have repeatedly led to anti-Muslim violence and intimidation. Recently, five Muslims were killed after police officers fired on Muslims protesting a court-ordered survey of the historic Shahi Jama Mosque in Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-ruled Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal, a move demanded by Hindu supremacists to check for temple ruins underneath.

Muslim-owned slaughterhouses demolished by officials in Madhya Pradesh

In BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh’s Khandwa, civic officials demolished Muslim-owned slaughterhouses, claiming that they were constructed illegally. According to the owners, they were notified about the demolition only the night before, leaving them with no time to relocate their belongings. One of the owners also claimed to possess old documents for the buildings.

India’s Supreme Court recently banned the weaponization of demolitions as collective punishment against Muslims, declaring that any demolitions carried out without proper notice or legal permission amounts to contempt of court.
