Hindu extremists arrested after impersonating Muslim identities to send bomb threats
Two Hindu extremist men, Tahar Singh and Om Prakash Mishra, have been arrested for sending emails under Muslim names threatening bomb blasts at the soon-to-be-opened Ram Temple in Uttar Pradesh’s Ayodhya city. The incident was staged by another Hindu extremist leader, Devendra Tiwari, who posted the email screenshots on X and used the subsequent social media buzz to garner further support and popularity from the Hindu right.
Tiwari has an extensive history of claiming to have received death threats from Muslims: he made similar claims in July, September, October and November 2023.
Indian publication The Scroll has noted that similar incidents have become a trend in India, where Hindu extremists deliberately impersonate Muslim identities while staging inflammatory incidents – including violent threats, hate speech, and claims of working with terrorist groups – as a way to spread anti-Muslim hatred.
Christians arrested after Hindu extremists attack prayer meet
In Madhya Pradesh state, two Christians were arrested after Hindu extremists attacked a prayer meet and accused the worshippers of forcibly converting Hindus to Christianity.
Madhya Pradesh is one of nine states that have passed stringent and undemocratic laws criminalizing conversion to religions other than Hinduism. Many of the states who have passed anti-conversion laws are ruled by the far-right Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Hindu extremists demand land allocated for Muslims after Babri Mosque demolition be converted to hospital
In a new online harassment campaign, Hindu extremists have demanded that a plot of land allocated for Muslims by the Supreme Court after the violent 1992 Babri Mosque demolition be converted to a hospital. Right-wing Hindu users on X have trended the hashtags #MasjidkoHospitalBanao (Turn the Mosque into a Hospital) and #MasjidKoMandirBanao (Turn the Mosque into a Temple) as a way to harass Muslims.
In 2019, decades after the centuries-old Babri Mosque was violently and illegally demolished by Hindu extremist mobs, the Supreme Court allocated the land once occupied by the mosque to Hindus, while allocating a separate plot of land to Muslims to build a new mosque.
