Five Muslims killed as police fired at protest against survey of historic mosque

Five Muslim men have been killed following police firing on Muslims protesting the survey of the historic Shahi Jama Mosque in Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-ruled Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal. Tensions erupted after locals resisted the court-ordered survey team, who were accompanied by a Hindu extremist mob chanting “Jai Sri Ram.”

The survey followed a court order based on a Hindu supremacist petition claiming that the 300-year-old Mughal-era mosque was built over a temple. The local administration has imposed prohibitory orders and paused the entry of outsiders till November 30. Internet services have been halted, and schools have been closed in the region.
